Opal opens up to Winn-Dixie in the beginning of this story. Why do you think it's sometimes easier to talk to or be friends with a pet than with people?
I think pets are easier to talk to because they seem like they hear you but they can't talk back to you or tell you if they think you are right or wrong. They still love you and don't treat you differently no matter what you say in front of them.
Pets are always loyal and love you - no matter what. They are great listeners and never talk back! I think it's easier to talk to them and be honest since they won't judge you.
A dog can't talk but a dog could be your friend because it will listen to you and not respond other than barking. Some friends will tell things that you tell them to keep a secret.

A pet can't talk back to you but he can still make you feel better because he's still your friend no matter what.
